 December 2009

The Biggleswade Twinning Association was represented at the switch on of the Christmas lights on 4th December and telling everyone about Biggleswade's twin town of Erlensee in Germany.

On the same evening, one of its members Phil Brown was in Erlensee.to take part in the opening of their Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market).  While the Association was selling non-alcoholic mulled wine (Gluehwein), the burghers of Erlensee were able to sample the real stuff as they tucked into the traditional German snacks of Bratwurst (hot dog) and Hamburger.  The market was held beside the church at Ruckingen, which was joined with Langendiebach in 1970 to form the new town of Erlensee.  The celebrations were held over the whole week-end and included a concert at the church and, of course, a visit from Father Christmas.

As well as meeting many friends in Erlensee made through the town twinning, Phil took the opportunity to visit the famous Weihnachtsmarkt in nearby Frankfurt-am-Main, a short bus and train ride away.
